Wickford’s MP, Mark Francois, has reacted angrily to the news that, after nearly two years of work, supermarket giant Morrisons has abandoned plans to redevelop the old Co-op store, at the heart of the town.
The news came in an email to the MP, from Morrison’s Corporate Affairs Director, David Scott, dated 4th April, in which he stated that: “after exploring all options we have concluded that the store plans are no longer viable.”
Reacting to this news, Mark Francois, said:
“Why have Morrisons taken so long to take this decision? These epic timewasters have treated my constituents very poorly and thoroughly deserve to be called out for it. I will now be writing, next week, to the chief executives of all the major supermarket chains, from ASDA to Waitrose, to see if we can drum up some alternative interest to finally take over and refurbish the old co-op store in the town centre. Thankfully, we’ve already got ALDI back up and running and now we need to sort the co-op store issue once and for all, too.”
