Mark Francois MP, who has been campaigning against excess roadworks and poor pothole repairs in Essex, has welcomed the news that Essex County Council has now decided to open up a competition for their lucrative highways maintenance contract, from next year.
The Rayleigh and Wickford MP was responding to the announcement that the current Highways maintenance contract, which is held by Ringway Jacobs, and which is due to expire in 2027, will now effectively be re-competed, when the County Council goes out to “test the market” in 2025.
Commenting on the decision, Mark said: “
Any regular Essex motorist can tell you that the standard of highways maintenance in our County is poor. The current contract, which is held by Ringway-Jacobs is not fit for purpose, especially regarding persistently poor pothole repairs and it will be good to see what other providers might have to offer Essex people instead - I just wish they could do this even quicker than proposed.”
