Rayleigh and Wickford MP, Mark Francois, recently met with Mike Katz, Head of Policy for FirstGroup, the operator of a number of bus routes in Mark’s constituency, in the House of Commons. Concerns were raised in regards to proposed plans by the company to separate First Bus from FirstGroup, through a possible sale or by other means.
The positive meeting resulted in assurances being made to Mark that stakeholders affected by the proposed separation would be appropriately consulted with. The proposal is in very early stages and is unlikely to be actioned this year. FirstGroup insisted that First Bus will ensure a clear focus on providing bus services and delivering for customers for the foreseeable future, whilst the process unfolds.
FirstGroup has a portfolio of five public transportation businesses in the UK, including both Frist Bus and First Rail. They also have significant operations in North America where they operate the Greyhound Bus Service.
Commenting on the meeting, Mark Francois MP said:
“It was very helpful to sit down with Mike Katz from FirstGroup to discuss the proposed sale of First Bus, the company provide a vital bus service for many of my constituents. I was pleased to be reassured that there will be no disruptions to local bus services while the process is undertaken. I will continue to monitor the progress of the proposal over the coming months, but during these early stages, I am pleased to see FirstGroup putting the customer experience at the heart of their proposal. I will, of course, update my constituents when I am in receipt of further details.”
