This afternoon, Rayleigh and Wickford MP and Member of the House of Commons Defence Committee, Mark Francois, questioned the Prime Minister about the threat from North Korea, which was discussed at the recent European summit in Brussels.
In response to a statement from the Prime Minister covering what was discussed at the European summit, which included North Korea, Mark told the House of Commons:
“The Defence Select Committee recently took evidence from a group of academics, who believed that North Korea is now capable of targeting the United Kingdom with a thermonuclear warhead. If this is true, would the Prime Minister agree with me that it would be absolute folly to abandon our independent nuclear deterrent?”
In response, the Prime Minister agreed on the importance of Britain retaining its nuclear weapons and explained to the Commons that the threat from North Korea had been the subject of serious discussions with other European leaders.
The House of Commons Defence Committee is now considering producing a separate report on the threat posed by North Korea, prior to Christmas.
