Mark Francois, MP for Rayleigh and Wickford, recently helped to open Wickford’s revamped swimming facilities by jumping into the new pool before cutting the ribbon, all while underwater.
Mark was joined by local councilors Malcolm Buckley and Kevin Blake at the celebration to mark phase one of a £2.4million refurbishment, which includes renovating the 25 metre pool, changing rooms, reception area and viewing facilities.
The next phase is a new two-storey extension featuring 65-station gym, group exercise studio, group cycling studio and dry-side changing facilities.
Basildon Council is working with its leisure partner, Everyone Active, to transform the 1970s facility in Market Road into the new Wickford Swim and Fitness Centre.
Commenting on the event Mark Francois said:
“Down the years I have been invited to open a number of new businesses and local facilities, but I think this is the first time I have had to perform the ritual underwater! Despite that, I am delighted that the council has been able to invest in this facility, especially as it has always proved so popular with my constituents.
I look forward to viewing the next phase, which will see the introduction of a top quality gym and exercise studios. My constituents in Wickford have a lot to look forward to.”
