Rayleigh and Wickford MP, Mark Francois, showed his support for the weekly Country Market in Rayleigh when he paid a recent visit to the Market, which takes place every Wednesday morning in the Women’s Institute Hall on Bellingham Lane. The Country Market is one of half a dozen or so in Essex, which originally grew out of the WI movement and which now take place in various towns across the county, including Danbury, Maldon and Saffron Walden.
Whilst visiting the market, Mark sampled some of the local produce and bought a jar of locally produced Rayleigh honey as well as some very nice lemon cake (which has seen been consumed).
The market has been going for some 35 years and provides an outlet for local producers of cakes, preserves and some farm produce to sell their wares to Rayleigh townsfolk. In addition, the market is also a popular venue for morning tea and coffee and Mark had the opportunity to speak with a number of the visitors to the market as they came and went during the morning.
Commenting on his visit to the Rayleigh Country Market, Mark Francois said:
“I had a really pleasant morning visiting the Rayleigh Country Market which has now been going for more than a third of a century and which provides a really social atmosphere for people to meet on a Wednesday morning. In addition, I had a chance to sample some of the wares on offer and to buy some for myself. The market is a very friendly place and I would encourage people to pop along and see if for themselves. If anybody wants further details, or indeed would like to volunteer to help out or bring produce to the market, then they should contact the Secretary, Belle Sibson, on 01268 742 323.”
