Mark Francois, MP for Rayleigh and Wickford, who is the patron of the Rayleigh branch of the Royal British Legion, recently spent an evening supporting a concert given by the Essex Yeomanry Band at FitzWimarc School, in aid of the Royal British Legion and the Poppy Appeal Fund.
The Essex Yeomanry band, who were lead by their Musical Director, Major Danny Greer, played a wide variety of music covering everything from wartime favourites to Bond movie themes. The conclusion of the band’s programme was very similar to the Last Night of the Proms, with Rule Britannia and Land of Hope and Glory as well as, of course, ending the concert with the National Anthem.
The event was well attended and was also supported by Cllr Simon Smith, the Chairman of Rochford District Council and Councillor Peggy Corbett, Chairman of Rayleigh Town Council, as well as senior dignitaries from the Royal British Legion.
Commenting on the event, Mark said:
“I have not heard the Essex Yeomanry Band play live before but I have to say they gave a really cracking performance and the Director of Music, Major Greer, was particularly skilful at getting the audience to join in. By the end of the evening there was a lot of hand clapping and foot stomping going on and all of the audience seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves. In addition the concert helped to raise valuable funds for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal which is as important a cause as ever, not least when we have our own soldiers still serving bravely in Afghanistan. The Essex Yeomanry Band did us proud and I hope to be able to hear them again in the future”.
