Mark Francois, MP for Rayleigh and Wickford, recently welcomed local school, Wyburns Primary, when they joined him at work in the Palace of Westminster. Pupils and staff from the school had an opportunity to take a tour of the Houses of Parliament, before joining Mark in Westminster Hall.
A group of fifty staff and pupils from the school, lead by their Headteacher Dale Watson, were given the exciting opportunity to take an extensive tour of Westminster, including both the House of Commons and the House of Lords. Following their tour, both the children and teachers met Mark before having their photograph taken together outside Westminster Hall.
After the tour of Westminster, which included a discussion on the history of the Houses of Parliament, pupils and staff from the school carried out a question and answer session with Mark, where they were able to ask Mark about his role and duties as a Government Whip, some of the different Prime Minister’s Mark has seen in action at Prime Minister’s Questions in his ten years as an MP, and also Mark’s views on the introduction of university tuition fees.
Commenting on the visit from Wyburns, Mark said:
It was a great pleasure to welcome the party from Wyburns Primary School to Westminster for their tour. I believe it is important that children are given the opportunity to visit Parliament and begin to get an appreciation and understanding of how our democracy works from an early age. The pupils’ understanding and knowledge of the role of an MP and the work that takes place in Westminster was very good and they had clearly taken in much of what the guide had told them during their tour. I hope that I was also able to help bring it all to life for them by answering questions about the role of Parliament and its effect on all our lives. I look forward to staying in touch with Wyburns in the future.
