Rayleigh and Wickford MP, Mark Francois, recently spent an informative afternoon at the Essex ‘In Car Safety Centre’ at Lubbards Farm in Rayleigh, where he met Hilary Wood, Road Safety Officer at Essex County Council, to learn about the best ways of protecting young children during car travel.
Mark learned of the difficulties associated with car seats and ensuring they are safe for children, and listened to a discussion with parents being advised on the best seat for their specific car. Mark was also able to view a demonstration of fitting a car seat, given by Vicky and Cathy, who are the specialists at the centre, and work with many Local Authorities, including Southend, and the Essex Fire and Rescue Service, to improve the awareness of how to best fit a car seat.
Every year over 1,200 children are killed or injured on the roads of Great Britain whilst travelling in cars, and as the service currently offered by Essex County Council is completely free, there is no reason why constituents shouldn’t take advantage of this potentially life saving advice. The centre also works with child seat manufacturers, not only to constantly update and improve current information, but to help and advise the manufacturer on any issues they may have.
Commenting on his visit, Mark said:
“It was a very informative visit, and having had a chance to see the highly experienced staff in action, it’s clear to see what a difference they are making to child safety in the County, and indeed further afield as well. Before my visit I had some idea in principle of what went on at the centre, but having had a chance to see first-hand, I feel that I now have a much better appreciation of the real value of the service being provided. Road safety is something I take seriously and it is good to see such a valuable service being offered to Essex residents”.
