Rayleigh and Wickford MP and Armed Forces Minister, Mark Francois, who is also the patron of the Rayleigh Branch of the Royal British Legion, was impressed with members of the Starlight WWII entertainment troupe, who he met when he visited the RBL’s recent spring fete.
The singers, whose repertoire includes a number of favourites from the WWII era, were performing in support of the spring fete, which was held at the RBL Memorial Hall on London Hill. They entertained visitors to the event, which included a whole range of stalls such as a tombola, a raffle and various goods and artefacts on sale.
The spring fete raised several hundred pounds towards the RBL Poppy Appeal and was well attended throughout the day.
Speaking about the happy event, Mark said:
“I am pleased that the fete was a success. Having the Starlight singers there added some fun entertainment to the whole event. I had been conducting a constituency surgery around the corner in Bellingham Lane that morning and the minute I came out of the door of my office you could hear the Starlight singers from some distance away on London Hill. I am a great supporter of the Royal British Legions work and it was good of the Starlight singers to give up their day to try and make the event go with a swing.”
