During a recent visit to the Sunrise Natural Health and Nutrition Centre in Hockley, Rayleigh and Wickford MP Mark Francois was briefed on the implications of the EU Food Supplements Directive, which would sweep away a vast number of vitamin, mineral and other supplements, and reduce others to weak, ineffective doses. This would not be on safety grounds, but simply to force us to conform to EU standards.
The pro Brexit MP heard that the British health trade has had a long running battle with the EU for many years, during which the EU has banned a number of herbal products, and restricted the sale of many others. British people have among the best health shops in Europe, yet their survival is now threatened by over-regulation from Brussels. Our shops sell mainly to British people, but have to obey 100% of EU regulations.
Richard and Sally Faraway, who run the Sunrise Natural Health & Nutrition Centre in Hockley, have announced that they will be voting “Leave” in the referendum, in order to try and protect their customers’ future, and they hope their customers will consider these facts when making their decision.
Commenting on the visit, Mark Francois said:
“The Food Supplements Directive is another example of where EU bureaucracy now interferes in people’s everyday lives. Why do we need the EU to tell us how much vitamin C we can take in the morning? The health food industry has lived under the threat of increasing EU over-regulation for years and the best way to alleviate this problem is to vote Leave on June 23rd.”
