Rayleigh and Wickford MP, Mark Francois, recently visited Abbey Memorials Ltd at Rawreth Industrial Estate, where he was given the chance to become a stonemason for the day, with the help of owners Tina and John Spooner.
Mark was shown around the premises, before being given in-depth tuition, and witnessing the skill that goes into creating each memorial. Mark also had a go at inscribing some stone of his own, with his initials, which now takes pride of place in Mark’s Westminster office.
Abbey Memorials was started in 1979, after owner John served an apprenticeship learning all aspects of the monumental trade, and subsequently building up the company with his wife Tina, up to a staff of 18 people. Known for using only the finest quality materials, such as granite from India and China, marble from Carrara, Italy and 23.5 carat gold leaf, the company has helped secure commissions such as the 20 ton war memorial, which is situated outside Harrow Council offices and was opened by the Duke of Gloucester, as well as the war memorial commissioned by Southwark Council in London.
Commenting on his visit, which was organized by a small business organisation, The Forum for Private Business, Mark said:
“It was very kind of Mr and Mrs Spooner to give up so much of their time and allow me to have a go at carving something into stone, albeit with an awful lot of help! It was a really enjoyable morning, and I was struck by their obvious dedication to what they do, and the loyalty of their staff. I learned an awful lot, and I hope to remain in touch with everyone at Abbey Memorials Ltd in the future.”
