Rayleigh and Wickford MP Mark Francois carried out the job of Returning Officer, when he announced the results of the school elections, during a recent visit to North Crescent Primary School in Wickford.
The school had organised elections to the School Council as well as electing representatives from each class to be eco-warriors and also sports ambassadors. The pupils themselves oversaw the organisation of the elections, which were all part of teaching pupils the importance of the democratic process.
In addition to the elections, the pupils were allowed by the Head of School, Ms Lucy Mitchell, to wear jeans as part of “Jeans for Genes” day, raising money for charity to help young people who suffer from genetic disorders.
North Crescent Primary School is also planning to convert to Academy status in January of 2018, in association with Rayleigh Primary School and Wyvern’s Primary School in Rayleigh.
Speaking about his visit to the school Mark said:
“It was very good to see the pupils at North Crescent Primary being taught the importance of the democratic process and I was very happy to be asked to be the Returning Officer to read out the results of the elections. Young pupils had been campaigning for some time to secure the votes of their fellow classmates and it is encouraging that they had this opportunity to see for themselves how elections work and how important voting can be.”
