Rayleigh and Wickford MP, Mark Francois, took part in a ‘poppy ride’ recently, at Westminster, as part of the Royal British Legion’s commemoration of Remembrance.
In essence, the ride represents a notional journey from London to Brussels (and the battlefields of the First World War), and each MP is encouraged to cover as much distance as possible, within a five-minute period.
Mark has taken part many times in this ride down the years and on this occasion, he managed to clock up 3.2km, which placed him around 13th on the ‘leaderboard’ of over 50 MPs.
Commenting on his participation in the ‘Poppy Ride’, Mark said:
“The Royal British Legion is a wonderful charity, which does a great deal of work to support both serving Armed Force personnel and Veterans. As someone who has been a longtime supporter of their vital work, I was very happy to participate in their ‘poppy ride’ 2023, and I was pleasantly surprised that to manage over 3km in the allocated 5 minutes!” I was also very pleased to see that the Remembrance Sunday services in my constituency were very well attended this year- despite the poor weather- as I deeply believe that it is important to remember the sacrifice of those who gave their lives, so that we can remain a free country. Lest we forget.”
