Mark Francois spent time at a recent weekend, assisting a group of local volunteers who had given up their Sunday morning to help pick up litter and rubbish in and around the High Street in Wickford.
The Clean-up Wickford team (sometimes also referred to as the “Wickford Wombles”), have organised a number of such events over the last year or so, allowing people to come together as a team to help improve the environment of the town in which they live. The team spent several hours using a variety of equipment, to pick up litter but also to tidy up flower beds, and carry out weeding etc. in order to help improve the appearance of the town.
Following the clean-up exercise, Mark met with several members of the group at the Posh Boys Brewery off Wickford High Street, to also have a discussion about the formation of a new Wickford Town Council, from the Spring of 2020 onwards – an initiative which I have supported, to help put Wickford more firmly on the map.
Commenting on the event, Mark Francois MP said:
"It’s great to see local people coming together and showing real community spirit, in giving up their spare time to help improve the appearance of the town in which they live. I was glad to roll up my sleeves, as it were, and do my bit. There is a strong sense of community in Wickford, and as the local Member of Parliament, I want to do all that I can to encourage that and in that vein I would very much like to thank all those that participated in the Clean-up Wickford event, which seemed to be a great success."
