Rayleigh and Wickford MP, Mark Francois, has welcomed today’s announcement by the Airport Commission that they have effectively ruled out a new major airport in the Thames Estuary as an option for expanding the UK’s airport capacity.
Mark, who has previously been sceptical of the so called "Boris Island" proposals, agrees with the Commission’s arguments that such a proposal would be both extremely expensive and potentially environmentally unsustainable.
Commenting on today’s announcement, Mark said:
"The Davies Commission have looked at the so called "Boris Island" proposals in great detail and have concluded that they are not really viable – something I very much agree with. We have played our part in South Essex in helping to boost aviation, for instance via the new investment at Southend Airport but what was proposed here was on a vastly different scale, ruinously expensive and bad for the environment. I hope today’s announcements will put paid to this idea once and for all."
